Output results of a ping command to a txt file
Posted by Paul Alsop on 29 March 2016 08:05 PM

If you are carrying out connection diagnosis for ADSL, FTTC, Leased line, etc you are often required to carry out a ping test to the router or from the router. This should be something you do almost straight away. However it helps as part of our documenting the steps we take within a case properly to be able to get the results of a ping into a text file so it can be added to notes. This provides ongoing evidence of actions and the performance of a connection at various points in time and helps an account manager for example to deal with complaints about speed or the service the client received from the help desk when they raised a case.

The more evidence we have the more we can help ease client fears and the more professional you look!

to do this is easy, open a command prompt and type the following.

C:\>ping "THE IP OR HOSTNAME YOUR TESTING" >> c:\Temp\whatyouwanttonameyoufile.txt -t"

obvious the folder you save to needs to be accessible from your machine so that can be changed but after you hit ctrl + c to stop the ping you will get a txt file with an output like this.
